Unmoderated Comment Caucus - Model UN After College

BestDelegate.com wants to hear from you!
  • For those of you who have graduated from college, are you still involved with Model UN? If so, in what capacity?

  • For those of you still in school - high school, college, etc - do you see yourself being involved with MUN in the future?
Here at BestDelegate.com, we all recently graduated from college and have been in the workforce for over a year. Once in awhile, we'll volunteer to staff Model UN conferences, post some tips on working a committee, or even plan Model UN websites for a living.

Do Model UNers ever really leave Model UN or do they just take an extended break?

Hi Ryan

You have a great blog, I have been subscribing to the rss feed for about a year now, and your website has lots of excellent resources! I am writing to you from the Chicago Int'l MUN (CIMUN)... I graduated from school about 2 years ago, but I have been involved in running CIMUN since 06. We are an independent non profit so our staff are by application only. About 40% of the staff are from universities around Chicago, and the rest are from all around the US, and even a few from around the world. A little less than half of our staff are graduates, so we have many staff that are professionals in various fields.... Of course these people were all MUNers and just need their fix.... There are quite a few nonprofit org MUNs that accept staff by application like AMUN, NMUN etc... or CIMUN (come apply for staff).

Since I graduated I now work in real estate (not to hot these days as you know) but i have to eat... but in my spare time we organize CIMUN, and we also have a few private consulting gigs with a few schools here.

It is hard to not be a part of MUN after you leave. It is important to keep that community a part of you.

I am blogging for a new MUN website called MUNWorld. I haven't written on it yet but some others have, you should check it out. Goto http://www.munworld.com

Hey Ryan,

Always a fan of the site, since it provides my MUN-ers some great tips and techniques.

After departing from Yale in May 20808, I worked in the local Governatorial campaign and now work as his assistant at La Fortaleza.

While work doesn't give me much time for conferences, I took the Academia Maria Reina team to the NAIMUN competitions last February and will return as a secondary coach for the local circuit competitions.

One of the main challenges returning to high school level MUN was the language barrier. I remember entering college and fumbling for a good year or so on English parli pro, and to return now to Spanish parli pro has definitely been a headache. "I would like a moderated caucus... caucus moderado? ... oh right! debate abierto! Because that translation make so much sense!"

There's also the aspect of "the hormones". Yes, they have their own role in college level UN, but something about having one of my kids not destroy some off policy delegate because "he's cute" doesn't quick work for me.

Still, you're right. Somehow, despite all my issues with it, I've returned to MUN. Or never really left. To be fair, I work in politics for a living, so it's inevitable that the practice of debate and strategy will always be an integral part of my life (you'd be surprised how many of your strategy tips work for press conferences).

Anyway, keep up the good work - the website is wonderful. Maybe we'll have better luck next time you visit PR so I can show you around!

*hugs*

I guess I will have to see whether I am going to leave MUN or not, having just graduated... HOWEVER. I do see posters inviting one to the ETH MUN team. I have thought about offering my services as a coach and getting to the team to go to HNMUN to become MUNTY's new European bane.

Just to keep my beloved old team on its toes!

Hey Ryan,

Great site by the way...can u post tips from the organizing aspect of it. (i.e. hiring sec members, choosing a venue). Again, I cannot thank you enough of the amount of information learnt on this site than all my conferences combined! Thanks again :)
